“Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can. God turns small steps into mighty mountains conquered.”-Coach Dalton Yeatman
As Christian men, we’re called to be stewards of the life God has given us—body, mind, and spirit. But too often, we let the weight of our past, the chaos of our present, or the fear of failure keep us stuck. We look at the gap between where we are and where we want to be, and it feels like an unclimbable mountain. I’m here to tell you: that mountain isn’t your enemy. It’s your mission. And the journey starts with one simple truth: start where you are.
The Power of Small Steps
In my work as a Christian men’s life and fitness coach, I’ve seen countless men transform their lives—not by chasing perfection, but by
embracing progress. The Bible reminds us in Zechariah 4:10, “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.” God doesn’t demand you to have it all figured out. He doesn’t expect you to be the strongest, the fastest, or the most disciplined right out of the gate. He asks for your obedience, your effort, and your trust.
Think about David facing Goliath. He didn’t have an arsenal of weapons or years of battle experience. He had a sling, a few stones, and unshakable faith in God. That was enough. What’s your sling? Maybe it’s a pair of running shoes, a quiet moment of prayer, or a commitment to show up for your family with more intention. Whatever it is, use what you have, and do what you can. God will multiply your efforts.
Overcoming the Excuses
Let’s be real—excuses are easy. “I don’t have time.” “I’m not in shape yet.” “I’ve failed before.” I’ve heard them all, and I’ve battled them myself. But here’s the truth: every man has a starting point, and no starting point is too small for God to work with. The Apostle Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 12:9, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Your weaknesses, your limitations, your setbacks—they’re not roadblocks. They’re opportunities for God’s strength to shine through.
When I started my own journey, I wasn’t the picture of discipline or strength. I was a man with a vision, a calling, and a whole lot of room to grow. But I made a choice to steward my body and mind as God’s sacred trust. That meant waking up early, even when I didn’t feel like it. It meant choosing prayer over procrastination. It meant taking one step, then another, trusting that God would turn those steps into something greater.
Practical Steps to Start Today
So, how do you start where you are? Here are three practical ways to begin your journey as a Christian man striving for growth in faith, fitness, and purpose:
Commit to One Small Win Daily
Whether it’s a 10-minute walk, a single set of push-ups, or five minutes of reading Scripture, choose one action that moves you forward. Small wins build momentum. As James Clear says, “You don’t rise to the level of your goals; you fall to the level of your systems.” Create a system of small, intentional habits that align with the man you’re called to be.
Anchor Your Efforts in Faith
Physical training is valuable, but as 1 Timothy 4:8 tells us, “godliness has value for all things.” Start your day with prayer or a moment of gratitude. Ask God to guide your steps and give you strength. When your fitness and life goals are rooted in faith, they become an act of worship, not just a checklist.
Surround Yourself with Iron
Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” You weren’t meant to climb this mountain alone. Find a community of like-minded men who will challenge you, encourage you, and hold you accountable. That’s why I created my coaching programs—to provide a brotherhood where men can grow together in faith and strength.
God’s Promise for Your Journey
Here’s the beautiful truth: God doesn’t just call you to start; He promises to walk with you. Philippians 1:6 assures us, “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.”
Every step you take in faith—whether it’s a literal step on a morning run or a figurative step toward better leadership in your family—is part of God’s plan to shape you into the man He created you to be.
Your mountain may look daunting, but it’s not about the size of the challenge—it’s about the size of your God. Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can. Watch how God turns your small steps into mighty mountains conquered.
